http://www.peelee.com/software.html pretty much explains it all.  Between
PhotoShop, Bryce, Poser, and Extensis, (and a very good multi-dimensional
eye) you, too, could pull this off.  But be prepared to spend some time on
it, particularly if you've never used products like Bryce and Poser.  Once
you get a handle on them, though, you can create almost anything.  Our
graphics developer uses hardly anything else and constantly amazes me with
the stuff he thinks up.  It should also go without mentioning that in
addition to time, be prepared to invest $$ in the software.  sigh....
