I've been using the Gimp for years. It's great and does more than I generally
need.

For 3D there's a lot of choice but probably either Blender
http://www.blender.nl/index_community.php (free) RealSoft
http://www.realsoft.fi/ (commercial) or Maya
http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/WhatWeDo/maya/see/solutions/soln_intro.shtml
(commercial, very good, very expensive). POV-Ray http://www.povray.org/
(free) makes beautiful pictures but is so hard to drive ...

Video editing I have no recent experience with but a quick search on google
yielded heaps of results - MainActor from Main Concept
(http://www.mainconcept.com/mainactor.shtml) looks interesting and
inexpensive.More links to products here:

There's a lot of high-end stuff in video/animation and render farms that's
moving to Linux if not already there. Unfortunately the price bracket is
usually out of my reach <.sigh>.

Then for multimedia authoring there's things like Metacard
http://www.metacard.com/ and Runtime Revolution
http://www.runrev.com/revolution/index.html depending on what you want to do
they might suit.

Good luck!
