It does work on most systems! However, I have found that ATI graphics cards
frequently have problems with QuickRes (esp. ATI Rage 3D cards).
The whole reason for the existence of QuickRes was due to the inability of
Win'95 to switch colour depth on the fly. The OSR2 version of Win'95 *can*
do this, so QuickRes is not so badly needed on this setup. NT 4 can also do
this. Note that there is an NT4 version of QuickRes available at
www.alastair.force9.co.uk/alastair/ in the Windows Utilities section.
The strange colour artefacts you have been seeing are a result of the way
web browsers treat colour palettes. When you start up your web browser, it
takes note of the colour depth you are running in, and then dithers graphics
accordingly. If you want to see an example of this, start up IE3/4 in 16 or
24-bit colour mode, and load a page with some graphics. Decrease the colour
depth to 8-bit (256 colour) without reopening IE. You will see all the
colours in the graphics go banded and horrible. Similarly, if you start in
256 colour mode, the graphics will be dithered, and if you switch to
hicolour they will still be so.
Moral of the story: if testing web sites in different colour modes, restart
the browser between mode switches.
