HP and UMAX are solid brands that consistently score
well in comparison tests run by magazines.

I would go to the newsagent and look at all the computer
mags, there is usually at least one doing a scanner
comparo at any given time (perhaps your local library
gets a comp mag or two so you can look up past issues).

Make your choice on the test results and what you see
in the flesh at the shop that sells scanners.

Personally I have only ever used SCSI scanners (HP 4c and
an old sheetfed greyscale thing) The HP is excellent.

I need to buy a decent quality flatbed scanner for a reasonable price
($100 to $200).  I would like a parallel port interface.  I've heard
that the HP ScanJet series is good, but now I've been hearing good
things about Umax (Astra 610P for around $100, and Astra 1200P series
for around $200).  BTW this is for use on Win95.
