Hi:
Okay, gang, I'm getting several emails asking how I cleaned my HD of the
files, so, maybe this post will save me from getting anymore private emails
on the subject. I've answered 9 already and have 7 more unanswered in my
inbox. <grin>
I am using Win95 v 2.5 and this post is merely what worked for ME .. and NOT
to say it will work for everyone in all situations. So, PLEEZE don't start a
string about how your version is better .. aight?
First, a word of .... WARNING:
I consider myself handy with a keyboard, but, I still called my local
computer Technician who gave me some instruction. Despite this I STILL had a
heck of a time in the registry. Nothing was familiar. :o)
It was VERY hard finding the fugitive files, and when I did I discovered
many of them were shared .DLL files linked to system operations.
I backed up each file one at a time. I then verified the back up files. I
then selected the group of bad files and deleted them as a group. I did
this because I knew that my computer would turn into an instant paperweight
once I started deleting single files and I wanted to know I cleared the bad
files out.
As soon as I deleted the group my system crashed instantly. I didn't panic
because it was a controlled *burn* and I rebooted from DOS, edited the files
I backed up, uploaded them to the registry, rebooted again, and all was
happy on the home front and my registry was then rid of the residual files
and I gained back the HD space and was able to load the software that had
initially detected the old files.
Something I wish to pass on .. I found there is a difference between
"rebooting" and "restarting" your computer. Many of my changes didn't take
effect until I "rebooted" by turning the power off, waiting for the HD to
stop spinning (took 15 seconds), then repowering the CPU. When I simply
"restarted" my changes didn't show.
I used "Clean Sweep v 4.0" for everything but the registry files.
I used my internal Win95 "Regedit" program for the registry files.
I now have learned how to keep a tab on files I load and their paths thus
doing away with this guesswork happening again.
Happy computing!!
Starr
