Another option to the suggestions provided (about flattening the layers) is
to do a "Save a Copy," which will flatten the layers automatically for the
saved copy, but leave the file in memory (on the screen) unflattened, for
further manipulation.

If you need to save as a GIF, you'll need to flatten first, either
manually, or automatically as part of the process of color-indexing. If you
do this, be sure you don't save over the top of your PSD file.
