Even though it's best to stick with the 216-color Netscape palette for
GIFS and backgrounds (otherwise they get dithered on 256-color displays),
there are some workarounds.<br>

One way, though requiring some careful planning, is to create a custom
color palette for all images (including background) that will appear on
each page (or just make a single palette for the whole site).<br>

But another, much simpler, way to create backgrounds of various pastel
shades is to "pre-dither" the background. Create a
16-pixel-square image with white, to start out, and then color every
other pixel, forming a checkboard, with the light color of your choice,
say FFFFCC (this would yield a very light yellow, almost cream). Even at
the lowest resolutions (640x480), an image so-dithered, cannot be readily
distinguished from solid color.<br>
