I have a specific method I apply to all sites.
I create an IMAGES directory (folder) in which are placed all images that
are actually used on the site. Under that directory, I create one called
MATERIAL. This MATERIAL directory can contain just about anything,
including text files that may be imported into an image, and may also be
subdivided into specific categories, for convience, such as ANIMATIONS.
I use the filename, itself, to iterate versions, and divide such iterations
into two quite subjective classifications -- small iterations and large
iterations. To each of the major iterations, I append a two digit number
(01, 02, 03 -- allowing up to 99 such iterations), and to each smaller
iteration, append to that two digit number, a letter (01a, 01b, 01c -- thus
allowing 26 minor iterations each). All these files, be they Photoshop
(PSDs), GIFs, JPGs, whatever, stay in the material directory. Only the most
current GIF or JPG is moved to the IMAGES directory, with all prior
versions moved back into the MATERIAL directory (or summarily deleted).
At times, iterations that are no longer being considered, I offload onto
floppies, ZIP drive, M/O, or JAZ drive, though, with the cost per megabyte
of hard drives these days, it's generally not necessary until completion of
the project.
Hope this helps.
