Thomas,
My personal opinion and technique is as follows:
1. I *always* ask permission of an author to use his/her original artwork.
It is thoughtful, considerate, and very professional -- not to mention the
law. :) I consider it a tremendous honor when someone asks to use something
I have created on their web site. I have only told one person no before,
and that was for a good reason. So, with that in mind I do the following...
2. When I create a site, whether it be a web site or an intranet site, I
usually include a page with all the necessary legal mumbo jumbo on it. On
that same page, I usually devote a paragraph to thanking any authors who
allowed me to use graphics, and provide links back to their site.
Anyways, that is my two cents. :)
Have a good one.
