Yep. They are created when an AOL viewer has their graphics compressed. To 
change that,  go to my aol > preferences > WWW > click the tab that says web 
graphics and click to clear the check box that says "use compressed 
graphics." There is a version of MSIE that can view these outside of AOL, but 
anyone else sees broken icon images.

for geting past AOL's quirks.
