Once upon a time the industry followed the convention of using the file
name extension *.html for HTML files (content type text/html). This worked
well, avoided confusion for end users, and was portable across a wide
variety of platforms (including those afflicted by eight-dot-three dementia).

Alas, with the belated discovery of the Internet by the Redmond Kids, armed
with their widely-flaunted contempt for convention and standards, crude
corruptions of *.html such as *.htm were inflicted upon the user community.
Lacking any technical justification [spare me the blather about Windows
limitations, unless backed up with substantiative technical arguments]
perhaps the Antitrust Rulings shed some light (see
http://www.dcd.uscourts.gov/).

Given the Babel excrement that the Redmond Rabble has engendered, many
(particularly Microsoft Minions) are fond of introducing even further
alphabet soup. For starters, I'd suggest looking at the Content-Type header
returned by such file. That will tell you if this is still another
variation on the theme of corruptions such as *.htm on one hand, or perhaps
some meaningful clue if it is something else.
