Claus-
I bought a Umax Astra several years ago without the slide attachment. This
was pre-USB. It works amazingly well. The thing with flatbed scanners is they
are never going to give you the high quality of a drum scanner.

Like another person wrote, it depends on your usage. I mostly do Web work but
I have used it for print as being the final outcome. They say to calibrate
your monitor, printer AND scanner so you can get the right results.

Results can be effected by how long the scanner has been on (warmed up or
not), what spot on the bed and how you turn the image (horizontal verses
vertical). You may have to do color correction in a program like Photoshop to
get the results you want but it certainly is doable.

I have a friend who has developed fine artwork with a cheaper scanner. He
calibrated everything so he could see the final results and then brings the
file to a prepress shop to do a higher quality print.

The scanner prices are low enough that if it isn't ultimately the results you
want, you haven't spent that much. If that is the case, the cheaper scanner
could also be used to make comps.

=======================
Hi,

I want to buy a scanner in the near future and don't know which one to take.
The scanner should be able to scan slides as well. A while ago I read on
this list
that Umax Astra is not bad, so I was looking for one in the shop, but
since the
price was quite low in comparison to 'name' scanners (HP, Agfa, etc.) I
thought
that the quality might be low as well. Does anyone have good experience with
a reasonably priced scanner? Since discussion of prices per se is
prohibited on
this list (and I am located in Germany anyhow), I'm just looking for kind of
general guidelines on what to take!

TIA,

Claus
