One very simple gradient I use in PhotoShop alot is one I call "Silver"
I called it that because the first effect I got with it was a silvery
effect, but you could use any colors you wanted.
Here are the instructions for PhotoShop 4.0.. you can create a similar
gradient in most other editing programs though.

1)  In PhotoShop, select the gradient tool, then go to the options window
    (if the options window is not displayed, you will have to go to
    "Window->Show Options"
2)  In the Gradient Tool Options window, click on the "Edit" button
3)  Click "New" and name it whatever you want.. I chose "Silver" :)
4)  You should get a simple gradient with the same color on both ends.
    You should see two color samples, one on either end of the gradient
    bar, as well as three more below the bar to the left.
5)  Click on the first color sample at the begining of the gradient bar.
6)  Click on the "F" color sample, which stands for "foreground".. it
    should be in the same physical row as "Location"
7)  Repeat the last two steps for the last color sample in the gradient.
8)  Click just below the gradient bar about midway through the gradient.
    Be sure the sample is labeled "F" like the other two.
9)  In the "Location" box, you should see a number very close to 50.. if
    it is not 50 exactly, make it 50 :)
10) Click on the "B" color sample, which stands for "background".. it
    should be in the same physical row as "Location"
11) Click just below the gradient bar about midway between each of the
    three existing gradients (around 25% and 75%)
12) Adjust the "Location" numbers for your two new color samples to be
    exactly 25 and 75 %
13) Click "OK" in the edit window.
14) To use the gradient, I suggest a diagonal sweep from upper left to
    lower right of the area you want to have a metalic effect.  Simply
    choose a foreground color and background color that are rather close
    in the general color you want the bar to be.  You may have to play
    around with it to get it how you want it.

NOTE: This is a very simple gradient. There are much better ways to do
      things, but this one comes in handy if you are rushed :)
