I don't use Paint Shop 3.12 but I use PSP 4.0 and I am trying the 5.0
version. Also I have MS Photo Editor on my job.

First of all, I found that it's necessary to make your images on a
background with the SOLID color most similar to the background you
really want to use. This will avoid an "aura" around your image -
specially if you added shadows, and make easier to set the background as
transparent.

I have used PSP 4.0 and I found the same problem that you mentioned, but
because I used always similar colors it was quite clean. The
transparency tool on the PSP 5.0 works much better. I think they have
corrected this problem.

On MS Photo Editor the transparency tool is very interesting, as you can
select the color to be set transparent ans also an tolerance.
