Simple... select the objects, and center them together horizontally and
vertically from the Modify > Align menu. This works in Fireworks 1.0 and
above.

(You'll usually want to use center-aligned text. If different words have
different letters but should all cover the same area, use either the
letter-spacing or letter-stretching abilities. Many ways to go, all at the
click of a button.)

In Fireworks 3 I'd usually use the Button Maker for multiple states of a
button, as Stephane advised... it's much faster to create artwork, change
words this way.

If time is tight, then moving to the new editable workflows may pay off
even better.
