This brings up something interesting. If the XML documents and the original
e-texts are not stored together, at the expense of a larger file size, could
we embed the original unmodified e-text in the XML document in a separate
section as a comment, or even as a displayable feature (like HTML Pre)? This
might help descrepancies from magnifying over time, since the e-text source
would always be there for someone who was doing some final editing or fine
tuning of an existing XML version. Is that worth anything? We do not have
the orginal print editions stored with the e-texts for reference, so it is
not easy to tell if the e-text really corresponds to the print edition, or
how well the print edition corresponds with what the writer orginally wrote,
or at least agreed with his/her editor what was to be the final form of the
work.
