I just replaced Opera 4 Beta 3 on my machine with beta 4 and it crashed on
my almost done XML files. The new beta seems to work about the same on some
of the other XML files on the HWG site.

I submitted a bug report to them.

As far as I know, my files are OK.  I had recently switched the syntax in my
CSS files for the books I am working to strict CSS2 since that seemed to be
what Netscape 6 is following. It does not appear that is the problem. Those
using Opera might want to check whether this new beta is a problem for them.
It might just be my machine, or my XML. My CSS and XML appear to be valid.

In CSS2 the construct "elementname.classname" to apply format to
"elementname" with class attribute "classname" is allowed for HTML only but
not for XML. Opera 4.0 beta 3 was indifferent to this change, Netscape 6.0
PR1 and some later builds worked better and seem to support CSS2 rather than
CSS1 in this respect, and Internet Explorer displayed OK but does not seem
to support the CSS2 syntax. Since CSS2 is the current recommendation from
the W3C, and Netscape and Opera are following the specifications as best
they can, I decided to use CSS2 even though format went a bit off in
Internet Explorer for Windows, a browser well known for its attempt to
subvert standards.

There are also apparently some 40+ errata for the XML 1.0 specification and
parsers are not yet 100% compliant with the specification, and some parsing
problems are related to these errors. I am using the SGML parser in
SoftQuad's XMetaL Pro 1.2 which is a commercial product.
