I had a hell of a time with this problem a few months back.
check out
www.dansteinman.com/dynduo
for an example
http://www.dansteinman.com/dynapi/docs/examples/pushpanel1.html

this has examples of how to do what you want.
It takes a load of javascript.
Also search for 'dynapi' on google and you'll find the latest versions
of what dan was doing.
