IMO there is no surefire way to do this. Word, Excel etc. register
themselves on IE as plugins just like say Flash or RealAudio so the browser
opens them in the same window.
I'm sure MS has a bunch of methods/properties (probably undocumented) for
doing this (they have an API for everything). Though I don't feel it's worth
the trouble.
