Maybe I misunderstood the question... then again maybe
not. If you have a select list with options apple,
charlie, foo, if the user tabs or mouses into the
select box and presses "f" then the next item
beginning with f, in this case foo, gets highlighted,
right?

I thought the problem was that he has a couple hundred
things that all begin with the same 4 characters. So
get rid of all the leading 4 characters, problem solved.
