Well, I'm not familiar with Visual Java, but I will assume that you 
refer to Sun's version of Java, as available in the JDK 1.2.2.  Then 
there is Visual J++, which is a Microsoft product.

I can't speak to developmental differences, as I'm only just starting 
to explore Java.  Visual J++ is a dev environment and a 
programming language.  So far as I know, you can't separate them 
and use Visual J++ with a different IDE or any of that.  Java, on the 
other hand, is a set of libraries and executables, and you provide 
the environment.  Whether you use Notepad and the command line 
or PFE set up with Java definitions, or a specialty product that 
integrates with the JDK (such as Kawa).  There are also apps you 
can get to visually build forms with JDK.  It works however you tell 
it to.

The JDK contains what I guess would best be referred to as 
"standard" Java, while J++ is the Microsoft version, complete with 
proprietary extensions and such.  That being the case, not all JDK 
applets will work in the MS JVM, and not all J++ applets will work 
in the JRE (Java Runtime Environment).

In a perfect world, everyone would use the same runtime 
environment for Java, and all of the code would be "write once run 
anywhere," which is what Java is supposed to be.  Sadly, too 
much politics is involved.

I use Opera for my browser, and have the JRE 1.3 plug-in set up for 
it.  You'd think I could make use of any applets with that setup, 1.3 
being the most recent JRE available.  Not so.  Quite often, I 
encounter applets that don't load.  I don't have a firm answer as to 
why this is, but I can only presume that the ones that don't work 
have MS-specific extensions that my poor JRE doesn't support.
