I'm fairly new at using layers rather than tables in website design and I'm
trying to figure out a way to position the background of my page (which is
600px wide by 400px high) in the exact center of the page regardless of what
monitor setting anyone may have when they go to visit the site. I then want
to position the rest of the divs (which will be images and text for the
content inside of that background image) on top of the first image (which I
do understand the z-index concept) but they would have to be positioned
relative to the top and left side of the parent div, since of course the top
and left sides of the page change the location of the parent div for someone
viewing on 800 x 600 vs someone viewing on 1024 x 768. Unfortunately it
would appear that the position:relative causes the layers to show up in
successive order rather than to use the borders of the parent layer as their
guide.

Any idea how to nest layers to achieve this? I have found that if I put the
parent layer inside of a single cell table with the <tr> values of
align="center" and valign="middle" I can at least get the parent layer where
I want it. But I have found no way to then put the rest of the layers in so
that they will show up properly regardless of the viewers monitor screen
size setting.
