Absolute Telnet isn't too bad.  I use SecureCRT myself though.

FWIW I have not had good experiences with Putty. On the other hand . . .
out of pure frustration, I downloaded "Absolute telnet"

http://www.celestialsoftware.net/telnet/

and it connected successfully 'right out of the box' to the same IP#
putty "wouldn't". 

I dumped Putty *Immediately* :-).
