Thanks to all who confirmed my suspicions that this problem is not 
RAM. In fact the Hosting company installed more RAM yesterday 
afternoon and last evening the same problem occurred.

I am absolutely convinced that this is happening because of a cron 
job that stops and restarts Apache.

I had requested daily logs (access and error) renamed xxxxxx_log.date
and gzipped. Early in March Tech Support set this up and it was 
running fine until last Tuesday when for some reason the logs didn't 
reinitialize which they attributed to Apache not restarting properly.

I believe that they then modified the script and that it is now 
causing this problem. In fact, the very next morning (Weds) was the 
start of the problem and it has now continued for a total of four 
consecutive mornings. HOWEVER, it seems like Apache is restarting 
after the job and FAILS about 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours later. Because it 
takes a few hours to fail, Tech Support is telling me that it is not 
the cron job. However, I find the coincidence too great to ignore.

Can someone give me a proper step-by-step procedure for closing the 
logs, renaming them and restarting Apache so I can verify what they 
are doing?
