Well, I use 'dump', but I don't think that does compression by default. (I
dump to disk, and then compress manually, keeping all my dumps on disk or
CD. I've not had good luck with tape.) Looking at the man pages for dump,
it looks like you can dump to STDOUT, in which case, I think you should be
able to compress the output stream before it hits disk. Otherwise, you
could dump to disk, compress the dumps, and then move that to tape. Not
really simple, but it could all be automated.
