Internet information server version 5 has a tremendous amount of options
that though far beyond the functionalities of the first versions, that were
really as basic as Windows Notepad. 

Problem is that the many features only flourish in an all Windows/all
Microsoft environment.  For instance, it has a tight relationship with
Internet Explorer 5, Microsoft Office and Exchange.  For running an intranet
in an all Windows network it will probably do a better job than any other
webserver, especially in web-based groupwaring.  For mixed networks and
Internet situations, it's a complete different story.

Microsoft developed the concept their own way, not bothering for other
webserver's standards.  Moving from another web server product you will
encounter many incompatibilities in concept.  The .htaccess mechanism is one
of them.

As a workaround, you could use the option to authenticate a (virtual)
directory against another domain.  You should set up a dedicated domain and
server, to control access to that directory.  It works only in basic
authentication mode, which is highly compatible with all browsers, but not
very safe, unless in a secure connection.

IIS5 offers custom error pages for all HTTP1.1 suberrors, if you want, for
every (virtual) directory another set of them.
