I just finished a Access 97 database last night and found it to be a snap.
There are a number of pre-setup steps to follow before getting results.
Once it setup I found making and manipulating a Access database very easy.

ASP files necessary are on the FP98 CD in
D:\60 Minute Intranet Kit\60 Minute Intranet Kit\modules

ODBC files are on the Office 97 CD in:
D:\VALUPACK\ODBC

once you have those installed use the file:
aspwis.exe
located at :http://support.microsoft.com/support/frontpage/fp98/aspwiz.asp

it takes you through the whole process step by step.  It's a snap
