IE4 dominance

My question is a spin-off from a fellow member's question.

I had IE3.02 , Netscape Gold and Netscape 4 running on the same 
machine without any problem until I installed IE4.  Obviously IE3 is
gone, Netscape Gold works fine but Netscape 4 would only work
on occasions.  

Then recently, I upgraded to IE4.01 (thinking some of the bugs would
be fixed)  and now Netscape 4.03 or  4.04 would not work at all.  I
had Netscape 4 installed on a Zip drive and it grinds quite loudly 
each time it  tries to boot up.   I only got as close as seeing
the browser's outer frame and then it dies.

Can anyone out there offer any clue or help?  I am desperate....
