To which I reply: My ISP won't support frontpage server extensions because the "bots" (prebuilt CGI scripts of sort) take up too much processing power. If they install the FP extensions for me, they'll have to let all the others use the FP extensions, also...which means lots of folks taking up valuable server processing power. Also, the naming convention used for my ISP is like www.essex1.com/people/mcneill .... which is bad for FP because it will only allow you to edit from the root and one directory (i.e. www.essex1.com/mcneill instead of the full name above). However, the school where I serve as techie has its own webserver (NT4, IIS4) which uses FP (with the server extensions) and it works terrific! (see school URL in signature) I don't notice any sizeable drain on computing power, either....then again, we don't have a million people using the extensions or a million people accessessing our web site. I suppose FP extensions would be a security risk for my ISP (not the school) because we (folks using FP) would have access to sensitive parts (CGI bins) of their server, and my ISP would HAVE to give me a directory that FP can handle (www.essex1.com/mcneill), which its not about to do. You can still create sites using FP. Simply type in a local directory as the "server name" (or IP address or site name), and you can manage the site from there...just don't use any "bots". ANd then transfer the files up via WSFTP (or whatever). OR you can ask your ISP for a virtual server...but I digress.
