E-mail Link Problem

I'm creating an e-mail directory thru FrontPage 2000.  One area that I'm
having a problem with is when the e-mail address contains a "&" in it (for
example "smith&sons(at)hotmail.com").  My HTML tag looks like this:

<a href="mailto:smith&amp;sons(at)hotmail.com">

However, when I click on the e-mail link, "smith" is the only part that
appears ("&sons(at)hotmail.com" is missing).  I've deleted the link & reinput
it, but I'm still having the same problem.  Does anyone know why this is
happening & what I can do to correct the link.  Thanks for your help.
