They both do, yes, and there are a lot of differences between the two. I
have heard FreeBSD may be better for some types of server systems, but Linux
should be OK at least for lightweight server applications. I have never
directly used a FreeBSD box.

They aren't rivals in the strictest sense. However they do compete against
other (mostly Intel compatible) Unix flavors which are sold commercially.
Something worth nothing, though, is that Linux comes in a variety of
distributions, some commercial, and is developed more on a grassroots level,
while FreeBSD's development team is more tightly controlled and AFAIK only
comes in one distribution.
