It is part of the NT 4.0 Server product... hardly "FREE" by a long stretch.

That is a matter of opinion, as well as perspective.

The Redmond Kids have made a benchmark and demonstration available at
http://www.microsoft.com . Without doubt a site of that site is far from an
easy site to index... and in my experience what they have is far from what
I as a site visitor would want... simple queries seem to get a large number
of unrelated results, with something relevant to my query sometimes pages
later (if I even have the patience to look that far).

For some situations, quite likely it is useful. Some folks have nice things
to say about it. A lot of it depends on the nature of your site. My guess
is that if you've a rather orderly site, you might do well with other
tools, such as something you might roll yourself.

Expect it to use a lot of resources, so if you have plenty, you might have
a situation where you are happy with the results. Frankly, from what I've
seen, if you are seriously interested, I'd suggest first installing it on a
sacrificial computer, let it do its thing, and see how you feel about the
results. Very much a case where usage studies, from the role of the site
visitor, would seem very much in order.
