Peter,

I would go with the argument that says build for tables that scale to fit
the window. That is, set the table size at 100% and work with that. What you
will, though, is that a some point the various elements within your page
will set a minimum size for the page.

At Red Square, that size is 800x600. However, we concentrate the most
important information (such as navigation etc) in the area of the page that
would be visible at 576x400 (ie webTV) which is the smallest we are willing
to accommodate in a graphically-rich page.

However, as much as possible, make the page scalable. Use % widths in your
tables. In general, this will add to an overall better experience for your
users - ie one more suitable for them.
