Controlling font size in table cells using ems

I'm trying to be "good" - really I am. I've built an intranet site using
style sheets for layout. Our company browser is currently IE5.5, but
some people have upgraded to IE6.0.

I've been using ems to control the font size, figuring that people could
then adjust the browser text size to whatever they want.

On a few of pages, I display data in table cells, assuming that this is
a legitimate use of tables, right? But then I notice that in IE5.5, the
text size is bigger than I want it to be inside the tables. In IE6.0, it
looks fine.

So I try explicitly setting font-size for TD and TH in the style sheet.
When I use ems, it looks fine in IE5.5, but in IE6.0, the ems multiply,
and the text inside the table cells is too small. Temporarily, because
this site is launching today, I've specified font-size for TD and TH in
pixels.

Is there a proper way to get around this and still use ems to set the
font size? Or am I just SOL?
