problem with background on nested divs

can anyone tell me where did I go wrong here?

the problem:
I use some nested divs on the page, and relies the layout a lot on
css. the page looks just fine in IE 5.5 and Opera 7.1. somehow, the
page background below the navigation bar on the right wont show up
they way I want it in Mozilla 1.3 & Opera 6.05.

another problem is, there's a little gap on the top when viewed with
Opera (both 6.05 & 7.1)

where did I go wrong here? is there any workaround?
