Drop cap effect

Have been trying out a drop-cap effect on a site still under development.
Looks good in IE5, OK in NS6 and Opera5, and marginal in NS4.  Anyone have
any suggestions on how to improve?

Also, the background is supposed to stay fixed in the table and does so in
Opera, but not in anything else.  I suppose it has to do with the level of
CSS support in the other browsers.
