Any up-to-date browser emulators that really do the job? If not, what
standard procedures have people developed to check renderings across
browser types and versions?

Ralph:

I work in a Linux environment, so I use a product called Win4Lin to have
multipule copies of Windows installed onto my system (note: only one can
run at a time).

One version of Windows has MSIE 5.5x on it, while the other has MSIE
6.0x on it. When I want to see how a web page looks, I simply fire up a
copy of Windows. The only downside is that you have to do a shutdown and
restart of Windows, but the Win4Lin environment does this is a very
timely manner.

I also on occasion check MSIE 5.0 on my wifes computer by using a
product called VNC. It allows me have a Window on my desktop that is
running her machine. Note: this does not work well when she is on her
machine (grin).

My design target, determined by looking various sites access logs, is
MSIE 5.5 going towards MSIE 6.0. I keep a wary eye MSIE 6.0. It seems
buggy.

I mainly design using Mozilla 1.0 (for Linux) since it seems to render
standards base pages very well, and then I back design to problems with
MSIE's implementation of CSS.

It is amazing to me how far the world has changed. A few years ago, one
designed for the most standards based browser (MSIE) then back designed
for all the problems with Netscape.
