That helps a whole lot. Thank you.

I just tried it with only one style="border:0" and the right side contents filled the 
entire page. It gets curiouser and curiouser!

I may have to live with the borders but there's a great tutorial at 
http://www.webreference.com/authoring/style/sheets/layout/advanced/ which, 
if memory serves, addresses the background colour problem in Netscape.
