I'm surprised no-one lese jumped in and said this, but:

With Netscape 4.x, if it fails to load a file referenced from a page, then
it 404s the whole page.

Therefore:
<link REL="STYLESHEET" TYPE="text/css" HREF="kennels.css">
References "kennels.css" in the same directory, but you've got the file in a
subdirectory, which will 404 from the server.
NN 4.x then fatals the whole page.

Other browsers do not behave in this way which is why it worked so well for
you in IE (and Opera and Netscape 6.x+ etc.).

Have had a small problem develop, nothing urgent, but kinda strange, to
me at least.

To explain briefly (will try), when starting with new ISP approx a year
had  to put page up on their server(?) under url http://www.grandane.com
which I did and because I don't use 'grandane.com' on its own as an url,
did a page (with no css) enclosing links to a couple of url's I do use
with style sheets, both in separate directories, ie
http://www.grandane.com/NS.Kennels being one...does this makes sense?

Anyway, yesterday I received a screen shot from a stranger showing
browser details saying this was what he had received (a 404 )when trying
the plain grandane url above but what was interesting, in the url
location shown in the screen shot I noticed there was
"http://www.grandane.com/kennels.css" instead of the plain
'....grandane.com'

I tried getting through on http://www.grandane.com myself altho I rarely
use this, (everything was fine several months ago when I went this
route) and lo and behold, as soon as I click, up comes a 404 and the url
address http://www.grandane.com changes with "/kennels.css"being added
to it.

To overcome this, I tried changing the name of the style sheet
'kennels.css' which is in my NS.Kennels directory, to 'scotia.css' and
also the css info on the index page of the NS.Kennels web-site. This
worked fine and is now OK with IE  but does not work with Netscape.
(Have cleaned disk, memory caches etc)

My ISP is telling me that as CSS is new, Netscape doesn't understand it
and that IE doesn't take any notice of it(?????!!) and the best thing
for me to do, is to remove it from all my pages because using CSS is the
problem! 

This is not a big problem to me, but I havn't heard of this happening
before and would be interested in finding out more about it if possible.
There is no css file in the ISP public directory hosting the plain
'grandane.com' page above but there is a css file in both the
directories linked to that page, the html code <LINK REL="STYLESHEET"
TYPE="text/css" HREF="kennels.css"> still remains on all the NS.Kennels
web-site pages but I have changed the name of the style sheet to <LINK
REL="STYLESHEET" TYPE="text/css" HREF="scotia.css">' and the necessary
info only on the index  page of this site to read 'scotia.css' in place
of 'kennels.css'
There is no 'kennels.css' file any longer in any directory but it is
still being added to the url.

Boy! what a mess trying to explain this, can anyone decypher and perhaps
have an answer?
