how to password protect

Hello,

I am looking for a script or program that will enable to me password protect
certain areas of our site.  We would like to have our users be able to
register themselves (i.e. choose their own user name and password), but not
enable the passwords until they are administrator approved.  We would also
like to have a function where users can request a lost password and have it
sent to them via email automatically.  Does anyone know of a script or
program to do this, or have any ideas on how to do it myself?  I am on a
shared (through an ISP) Unix server that has Apache.  I have been pretty
successful with installing perl/ CGI scripts so far, but I don't have the
knowledge to write them myself.
