Customising DW with doctype?

Hi DW experts!

I keep asking questions and hope to soon be able to start answering other
people's.  Until then ...

I am trying to customise UltraDev 1.0 so that the correct DOCTYPE appears on
the page.  So far, I have succeeded only in crashing UltraDev and having to
reload it.  I think I need to get into the source JavaScript or Java file/s
(whichever type they happen to be) and modify how they create the page/s in
question.

My problem is that I am still learning these languages and not confident I
know which files require modification - or where they are located.  Has
anyone been through this and resolved this issue?

My first thought to getting the DOCTYPE entered on the page was - create an
object!  I followed the procedure outlined in "Sams Teach Yourself DW 3"
book (there being a lot of similarity between the two versions, I thought
this would be OK). I opened a new window, wrote the DOCTYPE declaration
where I wanted it to go, saved the file in the OBJECTS folder and then
refreshed the OBJECTS menu.  All that did was add the DOCTYPE to the BODY
tag!

My next brilliant thought was to physically write it in to each web page
template in DW's arsenal.  So, I diligently coded the default.htm and each
web page in the FRAMES folder.  This was only partially successful - the
DOCTYPE appeared in the correct space for each web page - but the Frames
DOCTYPE did not appear when I tried to create a framed site (for my own
use - not professional).  It also created another problem - I stopped being
able to see the source code!

I  have now reloaded the software and am reluctant to proceed further in
case I do something more damaging to the program - like completely crash it!

This must be a fairly simple issue to resolve - I'm just not sure how to do
it safely and successfully <grin>!
