Flash or no Flash

Hey list!

I'm totally clueless on this one.  I just started learning flash a couple of
days ago.  So now I'm using it on my site.

I have a 125 x 125 movie in the right corner of my page.  Now I realize a
lot of people still don't have any macromedia plug-ins, so this one is for
all those who dont:

There has to be a way to detect if the movie will work or not on a browser.
What I would like to do is put a simple if/then thing on the site.  for
example:

if plug-in [flash] exists then
  display object [movie.swf]
else
  display object [image.gif]
end if

yeah, simple crappy example there, but you get the idea right?  So, the big
question:

Is there a way to determine the page's elements based on flash detection?

man...  that sounds confusing...
