I for one like Smart Tags, to a point. I don't like the fact of the
possible high jacking of pages.

I do like the fact that, I as a developer, can save a lot of time in
building glossaries or term definitions. A few of the sites I work on
are highly techinical sites with a lot of technical information and
company/industry specific terms and definitions.

I can create a XML file and use smart tags to provide more information
inline with the web page.

Now, along with other new technologies, there is the possibility of
nasty people doing improper things, but before everyone goes and starts
some holy war against Microsoft regarding Smart Tags we need to keep in
mind that there are good things that can be done with the technology.

For example,

I was looking into a streaming video company to do streaming of ome of
our content and I failed to notice the first time that I read the
contract that there was a disclaimer in there that stated because we
were signing up for the "ecomony" plan, they had the right to place
advertisments in the beginning of every stream.

Think before the you start the holy wars.

Although MS says they are not going to be included in this new release
of IE 6 they will not give up this project according to their sources.

It means added revenue for them as they can redirect anyone, who visits
a site that the tags are not disabled. The Smart Tags that are enabled
on any site  can redirect the visitor to another site owned or operated
by MS

So much for that oft used term "Is your site sticky?"

Not anymore! All the money we spent trying to get people to  our site
(i.e. to buy a car) and they come across a word like BMW, they will be
redirected to CarPoint as an example with a link under the word BMW.

Would that not make every site builder an advertiser for a MS owned
site?

Now that is Monopolistic!!

It is downright intentionally Interfering With the business of another
as well as infringement of the copyrights of the site owner, in my
humble  but outraged opinion.
