Director is used primarily for CD and DVD-ROM applications. You can embed
Flash movies in it, but it's apparently much more. It uses its own
programming language called "Lingo" and you can build your own custom GUI
with it, incorporate video, etc. When I downloaded the trial, it appeared
to look similar to Flash in the "timeline" aspect but that's pretty much
where the similarity ends. I would say Director is Macromedia's answer to
Microsoft's Visual Basic (which is what our company uses to produce CD-ROM
applications).

The learning curve for Director appears steep but I've never really tried to
really sit down and give it a go. When I saw that it used its own
programming language, I bristled. :) I do see a LOT of CD-ROMs from
companies made with Director.
