Nesting is the short answer, I'd guess - center probably doesn't have any
font size set and H1 takes it from there. Why not use styles to centre H1s,
or use align="center"?

A useful tip if you get a problem like this - try removing tags one at a
time and view the result. That way, you can often figure out the problem
quite quickly.
