Non-javascript Flash detect

Question:

I have a flash file in my default page which directs users to the Flash file
and a meta refresh tag with url as the html version of the page which
refreshes after 10 seconds. This is the Macromedia recommended method of
detecting the plugin without javascript.

Unfortunately, the browser (MSIE 5) gets "stuck" in some kind of a loop
which can only be exited by right-clicking on the page.
