Maureen, I know of a nice simple script you can use by Matt Kruse..
it is pretty self contained, and events can be entered by anyone.
Here is the calender in question. http://www.mattkruse.com/scripts/calendar/
I think this would handle what you want.
I use it on one of my sites!
