1) WinXP Pro, IE6: all images look fine

2) It is not possible, nor has it ever been possible, to create a site that
looks consistent across all platforms.  It is not necessary to do so.
Design for your average audience, but expect the occasional visitor using a
platform outside that norm.  NN4 is many years old in an environment where
one generation of standards rarely lasts more than two years.  NN4 has
reached the same state as IE4 or NN3: it's a curiosity.

As long as your visitors can access the content they can use the site.  If
our friend the Mac/NN4 user prefers his platform then we have no place
trying to convince him otherwise, but I'm sure he will realize as time
passes that his stuff is becoming dated.  He'll upgrade when he's ready or
when his machine dies.  How long can you continue to code for the holdouts.

For that matter, why this guy and not the Linux/NN4 user?  Or the Windows
98/IE4.x user?

I don't have enough time to join the Great Debate, but I will say that the
XHTML/CSS move simply makes sense from a coding viewpoint.  It is sensible.
There may be transition pains, but they are also passing. I have no idea
where our field will be in ten years, but I doubt that we will be coding for
NN4...or even IE6...:).

Regarding the current hot debate over standards, I love CSS and am loath to
use deprecated tags but recently saw this same site on a business associates
older MAC running Netscape 4 and was not happy with the view. (Border
attribute not supported) I didn't think anyone was still using that program!
I think my 'job' is to try to create a website for someone that will look
CONSISTENT in a wide range of browsers. I'm starting to wonder if I need to
add a browser sniffer with a redirect for older browsers and have two
versions of a site.

Oh, I'm running Windows XP of a PC and run Norton Antivirus also.
