imagemap combined w/javascript

Can I have the hotspots on my image map bring an
image up on the same web page, instead of bringing
text up in the status bar at the bottom? If so, what would
the script look like between the head tags, and then
what would the format be for adding the coords, the links,
and swapping images?
I am new to both image maps and javascript.
