I always assumed that these were affiliate programs where each  affiliate
needs an ID number.
Using other people would prevent the "parent" company from getting kicked
off their servers
for spamming. It just seems in keeping with the expected actions of "people"
who use such tactics.
But - you know what "they" say about those who assume.
